Netflix Hires London-based Publicist to Head Original Movie Marketing16 Sep, 2015 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Netflix has hired Emma McCorkell, managing director of Organic Marketing, a London-based PR firm, to head publicity for its original movie productions.
With Netflix set to concurrently stream and release theatrically its first original movie Oct. 16 — African warlord drama 'Beasts of No Nation,' starring Idris Elba — the SVOD pioneer hired the publicist to help get the word out and deal with probable industry blowback.
McCorkell's job should prove challenging considering Netflix’s plan to stream movies day-and-date with theatrical debuts — a strategy that has irked theater operators and prompted planned boycotts of the screenings. McCorkell, who has been at Organic since 2011, will relocate to Netflix’s Beverly Hills, Calif., office.
Future Netflix movies include Adam Sandler’s The Ridiculous Six on Dec. 15, followed by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend, a co-production with The Weinstein Co. of the 2000 Oscar winner, bowing in the first quarter 2016 in China, on select Imax screens and Netflix.
Finally, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, starring Paul Reubens and directed by Judd Apatow, premieres on Netflix next March.
