Ex-MGO.com COO Named CEO of Pure Flix Digital8 Sep, 2015 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Pure Flix Entertainment Sept. 8 announced it has hired former MGO.com COO Greg Gudorf as CEO of Pure Flix Digital, a new subscription streaming service specializing in faith-based content. Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Pure Flix also hired former Sony Electronics executive Brian Pancarik as VP of operations and support.
In May, the company, which produces, distributes, acquires and markets Christian and family-friendly movies, hired Steve Okin as VP of home entertainment distribution, and Franklin Santagate as VP of outreach.
According to a report from Pew Research, 229 million Americans — 73% of the nation’s population — identify themselves as Christian. A Harris Interactive Poll from December mirrors those results, reporting 74% of Americans believe in God.
Recently, faith-based movie tracking service Movieguide released a study showing that during the past decade, movies adhering to Christian views averaged more than $73 million at the box office, compared with $21 million for films that didn’t abide by Christian morals.
Indeed, Pure Flix (together with Cinedigm) hit a home run in 2014 with God’s Not Dead, which jumpstarted a moribund faith-based movie market generating $60.7 million at the box office on a $2 million production budget. The title sold another $22 million in combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales, according to The-Numbers.com.
Now, Pure Flix Digital (PureFlix.com) aims to capture the same faith-based consumers via subscription streaming. Cinedigm is also targeting the market with The Dove Channel, a SVOD service backed by The Dove Foundation.
Gudorf will be responsible for directing and driving the site’s growth, which includes more than 2,500 full-length feature films, independent and educational films, kid’s animated titles, TV series and documentaries. The service is available on Roku, iOS and Google apps, for use on smart phones, tablets, laptops/PCs, or televisions.
“Greg’s technical experience in the video streaming space, along with his ability to successfully take new platforms and services to market, makes him a welcome and valuable addition to the Pure Flix family,” founding partner Michael Scott said in a statement.
Gudorf most recently was COO of MGO.com, a streaming service and joint venture between Technicolor and DreamWorks Animation.
