‘Samson and Delilah’ Debuts on DVD

11 Dec, 2012 By: Ashley Ratcliff

More than 60 years after its theatrical release, Cecil B. DeMille’s Samson and Delilah will arrive, fully restored, on DVD March 12 (order date Jan. 29) from Paramount Home Media Distribution.

The restoration team, who simultaneously worked on remastering Sunset Boulevard, scanned in 4K the original nitrate three-strip Technicolor negatives, which subsequently were registered, cleaned and color-corrected in 4K. The original mono audio track also was cleaned and restored.

The DeMille classic — sometimes called the director’s rehearsal for The Ten Commandments — retells the biblical story of Samson, the fabled strongman, and Delilah, the Philistine woman who seduces and betrays him. It stars Victor Mature and Hedy Lamarr in the titular roles, as well as George Sanders, Angela Lansbury and Henry Wilcoxon.

Samson and Delilah (1949) was nominated for five Academy Awards and won two, for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.

The DVD is listed at $24.99.
