For some fans, seasons five and six of the Showtime drama “Dexter” didn’t quite stand up to the prior seasons. But season seven seems to have put the show back on an upswing, hopefully setting the series up for a good finale in its eighth and final season, which begins airing June 30.

Golden Globe winner Michael C. Hall stars as Dexter Morgan, blood spatter analyst for the Miami Police Department by day, serial killer by night. At the end of season six, his sister, Deb, walks in on him during a kill and learns his secret. Not only is she family, but she’s also a lieutenant with the police department, which puts her in a difficult spot that gets addressed here.

Meanwhile, Dexter falls in love with a like-minded killer, Capt. LaGuerta figures out that Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher, and, of course, more people end up dead.

This season set comes with no bonus materials related to the show. While it’s a little understandable that after six seasons there might be a lot less to say, it would have still been nice to have something extra for this still popular and acclaimed series.

Like all the other season sets, this one also features a bonus episode of another new Showtime show. The hour-long episode of “Ray Donovan” stars Liev Schreiber in a new drama that premieres June 30. Schreiber’s title character is a professional “fixer” who cleans up the problems of the rich and powerful, while his own personal problems seem to spin out of control.
