Panasonic Launches New 3D Blu-ray Systems

1 Sep, 2010 By: Chris Tribbey

Panasonic made a slew of 3D announcements Sept. 1, highlighted by the debut of the company’s first 3D Blu-ray Disc home theater systems.

Panasonic also unveiled a 3D camcorder and announced plans for several 3D technology centers around the world.

“Panasonic’s new suite of professional 3D products is a linchpin of the company’s end-to-end 3D strategy, and will provide wide-ranging, cost-effective opportunities for 3D content creators,” said Rance Poehler, president of Panasonic Solutions Company.

Available in September, the 3D Blu-ray home theater systems, the SC-BTT750 and SC-BTT350, feature networking and connectivity capabilities and offer access to Amazon VOD, Netflix, YouTube and other online content services.  Both systems include iPod/iPhone docks, SD slots and speakers. Pricing was not announced.

The camcorder, the AG-3DA1, is priced at $21,000, and Panasonic says it is the first high-def 3D camcorder that can record to SD media cards.

Additionally, Panasonic is opening a 3D Innovation Center in Secaucus, N.J., this fall, with a similar branch planned for Los Angeles. Panasonic said the center’s aim is to bring together entertainment and broadcast companies to enhance 3D production technologies and workflow and foster collaboration with industry partners to develop new applications for 3D technologies.

“Panasonic foresees the expansion of 3D technology into nearly all aspects of the entertainment electronics industry, but we also see it being applied in a diverse range of other industries including healthcare, education and beyond,” said Joseph M. Taylor, chairman and CEO of Panasonic Corp. of North America. “It is only a matter of time before 3D becomes an essential element in the operations of many major enterprises and the new Panasonic 3D Innovation Center will work to support that process.”

Panasonic already operates a 3D Innovation Center in Japan and has plans for another in Europe.
