Nintendo Posts Loss, Drops 3DS Price28 Jul, 2011 By: Chris Tribbey
With sales off by 50% for the quarter ended June 30, Nintendo posted a loss of $327.4 million July 28.
Responding to sluggish sales, the video game company also announced it would slash the price of its 3DS portable gaming system from $250 to $170 in the United States, effective Aug. 12.
Nintendo has sold more than 830,000 3DS units in the United States since its March 27 launch.
“For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now,” said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. “We are giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games.”
For the quarter Nintendo sold 1.56 million Wii units worldwide, down from just more than 3 million during the same quarter of 2010.
