'The Big Lebowski'

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington Dec. 17 announced the annual selection of 25 motion pictures named to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

The 2014 registry list includes such films as 1998’s Saving Private Ryan, the World War II movie directed by Steven Spielberg; the 1968 horror masterpiece Rosemary’s Baby; Arthur Penn’s 1970 Western saga starring Dustin Hoffman, Little Big Man; director John Hughes’ 1986 comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off; and Joel and Ethan Coen’s 1998 cult classic The Big Lebowski.

The list also includes John Lasseter’s 1986 animated short Luxo Jr., which introduced the iconic lamp in the Pixar logo; 1953’s Vincent Price-starring House of Wax, the first full-length 3D color film from a major American film studio; 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder; and Howard Hawks’ 1959 Western Rio Bravo, with John Wayne.

Starting in 1989, per the National Film Preservation Act, each year the registry adds 25 films that are “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant for preservation for all time. The films must be at least 10 years old. The public is urged to make nominations for next year’s registry at www.loc.gov/film. This year’s selections bring the number of films in the registry to 650.

This year’s list also includes silent films The Dragon Painter (1919), Shoes (1916) and Unmasked (1917). In 2013, the Library of Congress released a report that stating that 70% of American silent feature films (generally, movies made before 1929) have been lost forever and only 14% exist in their original 35mm format.

For each title named to the registry, the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation works to ensure that the film is preserved for future generations, either through the Library’s motion-picture preservation program or through collaborative ventures with other archives, motion-picture studios and independent filmmakers.
