23 Sep, 2002 By: Hive News

The rush to online streaming continues, this time with Yahoo!'s pay-to-play "Games on Demand" service that will let Internet users with high-bandwidth connections play such titles as Civilization III and Serious Sam from the Internet, not their hard drives.

"We created Yahoo! Games on Demand to offer consumers value-added features they want including convenience, choice and control," said Daniel Hart, senior director, Yahoo! Games and Entertainment. "Through Yahoo! Games on Demand, consumers can play their favorite games from a broadband-connected PC, save games between play sessions and play a wide variety of games while enjoying the same experience of playing a store-purchased PC game."With the one-time download of the Yahoo! Game Launcher announced today, Games on Demand subscribers can play a variety of games, downloading just the files necessary to begin game play and leaving the rest to download and stream in the background.

More than 40 games are available, including Civilization III, Deus Ex, 4X4 EVO, Star Trek Armada II and Serious Sam. Games on Demand subscribers will also be the first to preview and play Infogrames action game Zapper, whose title character is a cricket with high-voltage antennae. The Games on Demand version is the same version to be sold in stores.

Subscribers can pay for multigame, monthly subscriptions or single, three-day rentals. Game rentals are offered at four price levels: $4.95 for the rental of one game for three days; $9.95 for the rental of three games for 30 days; $12.95 for the rental of five games for 30 days; and $14.95 for the rental of 10 games for 30 days. Yahoo! Games on Demand provides subscribers with a personalized "My Games" page, which tracks their rentals and subscription packages, as well as updates to the Games on Demand service.

Requirements for the service include a broadband Internet connection; registration for a Yahoo! ID and Yahoo! Wallet; Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP; a Pentium 233 MHz computer with at least 64 MB RAM, 500 MB of hard drive space, and Direct X and compatible SVGA video and sound cards. Users also must download the Yahoo! Game Launcher, powered by Exent Technologies.
