As the home entertainment industry negotiates both physical and digital content distribution, these executives see a chance for greater growth, but are also facing an urgent need to find new ways to reach that growth.

Netflix Ending Epix License Deal

Netflix is not renewing a content license agreement with Epix, CCO Ted Sarandos disclosed Aug. 30 in a blog post. The reported $1 billion deal signed in 2010 gave Netflix access to select major theatrical movies 90 days after bowing on the multi-platform pay-TV service co-owned by Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Alabama Nixes Proposed Tax on Video Streaming, Digital Rentals

Taxes in politically conservative Alabama are as popular as a Crimson Tide college football loss. Thus, it wasn’t surprising when the Alabama Department of Revenue last month retracted a regulatory amendment that would have effectively imposed a 4% rental tax on streaming services such as Netflix.

Justyn Egert Amazon's Justyn Egert Joins EMA Board

Justyn Egert, head of the digital video store for Amazon Instant Video, has joined the Entertainment Merchants Association’s board of directors. Egert has been with Amazon since 2001, and previously headed the print-on-demand service in the United Kingdom, launch of the Kindle, and was in charge of digital video vendor relations.
