Where have all the shoppers gone?

More than half of holiday shoppers (55.6 percent) bought at least one gift online during the holiday 2005 shopping season, and youngsters were more likely to buy on eBay than on Amazon.com, a new study says.

Overall, shoppers made most of their purchases from Amazon (18.3 percent indicated so), followed by eBay (13 percent), WalMart.com (4.7 percent), Overstock.com (3.1 percent), and JCPenney.com (1.4 percent), according to market intelligence firm BIGresearch.

The same retailers appeared in most of the age-specific lists but often in different order. In addition to those already mentioned, top sites for gifts were bestbuy.com, circuitcity.com, buy.com, QVC.com and quixtar.com.

Survey participants were asked to name the sites where they shopped in an unprompted, write-in format.
