When 'Eight' Is Great

5 Jul, 2008 By: John Latchem

One of TLC's most popular reality series is finally coming to DVD. Genius Products will release Jon & Kate Plus 8: Seasons 1+2 Sept. 9 (prebook July 29) as a two-DVD set at $19.95.

“We've gotten a lot of inquiries about this title, not just from consumers but also from retailers,” said Laurie James, director of marketing for lifestyle product at Genius.

The show chronicles the lives of Jonathan and Kate Gosselin, a Pennsylvania couple raising eight children, comprising 6-year-old twins and 2-year-old sextuplets when the show began.

“It's instructional and entertaining,” James said. “They're great parents but not your typical parents.”

The first DVD set includes 18 half-hour episodes, plus a bonus one-hour special.

“It's definitely appropriate for the entire family,” James said. “Once you start watching you can't stop. I'm actually hooked on the show.”

James indicated the show's appeal reaches far beyond the expected demographic.

“It's not just for women,” James said. “When I'm in a crowd talking about this show, there are guys who speak up and say ‘I admit it. I'm addicted too.’

The show's third season is finishing its run, with new episodes Mondays at 9 p.m. on TLC.

James says the show's focus on unconventional family life connects it thematically with another TLC series, “Little People, Big World.” The three-DVD Little People, Big World: Season 2 Vol. 1 streets Sept. 2 (prebook July 22) at $24.95.
