The Weinstein Co. Inks Animation Deal23 May, 2007 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Spurred by the success of animation titles, The Weinstein Co. — which owns 70% of DVD distributor Genius Products LLC — announced it has entered into a co-production and co-finance deal for theatrical, DVD and television content with Exodus Film Group.
L.A.-based Exodus is a private equity animation film fund that is producing the Oct. 24, 2008 theatrical CG title Igor distributed globally by The Weinstein Co.
No doubt motivated by the success of DreamWorks' “Shrek” franchise, Igor tells the story of an evil scientist's hunchbacked lab assistant who has dreams of becoming a scientist himself.
Voice cast features Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”), Jay Leno, John Cusack, Jennifer Coolidge, Arsenio Hall, Molly Shannon, Steve Buscemi and Christian Slater, among others.
“With our first collaboration … looking so strong, we thought the timing was right to further the relationship and to begin on an Igor sequel,” Harvey Weinstein said.
Future CG titles with TWC include Escape From Planet Earth, Opus, Cricket in Times Square, and the sequel Hoodwinked 2: Hood vs. Evil.
Exodus CG titles The Hero of Color City and Bunyan & Babe will be distributed by Magnolia Pictures.
