HD DVD backer Warren Lieberfarb says the studios have been “duped” by rival Blu-ray Disc supporter Sony Corp.

Speaking Wednesday at the European Video Perspective conference in Biarritz, France, the opinionated former Warner Home Video president reportedly said Sony had made a calculated move to give the advantage to Blu-ray through the PlayStation 3 (PS3). Sony's decision to include Blu-ray in its upcoming PS3 video game console — while possibly excluding a license to Microsoft's just released Xbox 360 — gives Blu-ray a decided advantage, he said.

“If I put Blu-ray in [PS3] and I don't license it to Microsoft … and I get all the studios to only publish in PlayStation, I'll beat Microsoft in the next generation games market,” said Lieberfarb, according to published reports. “Hollywood blew it. They could have created the format that optimized their creative interests. It looks like we lost because there are six studios supporting Blu-ray and only three supporting HD DVD.”

Microsoft, heretofore a supporter of HD DVD, hasn't officially committed to a format. Both formats are scheduled to launch players and packaged media in 2006.
