Warner Staking 'Roots' in May

22 Feb, 2007 By: Erik Gruenwedel

It is not just high-profile movies getting the anniversary treatment on DVD.

Warner Home Video May 22 will bow a 30th anniversary special edition release of acclaimed television series “Roots” for $59.98. Prebook is April 17.

Special edition bonus features include mini-videos “Crossing Over: How Roots Captivated An Entire Nation,” and a behind-the scenes documentary, “Remembering Roots.”

Other material includes video and audio highlights with key cast members discussing their memories filming particular scenes.

The special edition DVD will be released in tandem with a TV rebroadcast, 30th anniversary paper and audio books May 8.

The 1977 Emmy-winning telecast is based on Alex Haley's best-selling novel about his African heritage and starred LeVar Burton (“Star Trek”), Ben Vereen and Louis Gossett Jr., among others.

The landmark program, which became a catalyst for discussions about race and sparked a national interest in genealogy, is also considered to have ushered in the mini-series format for television.

Warner last released “Roots” on DVD in 2002.

“The effects of ‘Roots' can still be felt today and we are excited for new generations to fall in love with this landmark mini-series,” said Tehya Kopp, executive marketing director, documentaries and telefilms, WHV.
