Warner Fetes Early 2007 Hi-Def Releases5 Dec, 2006 By: Erik Gruenwedel
In an effort to jumpstart “fifth quarter” sales, Warner Home Video Jan. 16 will street three new movies in next generation optical media formats HD DVD and Blu-ray for $28.99 each.
Making its Blu-ray debut is GoodFellas; the 1990 six-time Oscar nominated gangster film from director Martin Scorsese. Lauded as the best mobster film ever made from film critic Roger Ebert, GoodFellas featured an all-star cast, including Robert DeNiro, Ray Liotta, Lorraine Bracco, Paul Sorvino and Joe Pesci, who won best supporting actor for his performance.
GoodFellas bowed on HD DVD May 2.
Bonus features, which were included in the standard DVD and HD DVD releases, include two audio commentaries, production sketches, making-of interviews and documentaries featuring contemporary filmmakers' comments on the film.
Though a box office disappointment, the HD DVD release of action-adventure Poseidon — directed by Wolfgang Peterson (Troy, Perfect Storm) and starring Kurt Russell — features In-Movie Experience (IME), an interactive feature that finds co-star Josh Lucas leading viewers through the trials of creating visual effects and action on an upside-down water-filled set.
Scooby Doo: The Movie (2002) bows on HD DVD and Blu-ray for the first time. The theatrical adaptation of the venerable cartoon series stars Freddie Prinze, Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar (The Grudge 2) and Matthew Lillard.
