'Walking Dead' Finds Life as Top Disc Seller

Anchor Bay's disc collection of season five of the hit zombie series “The Walking Dead” debuted at No. 1 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart the week ended Aug. 30.

Hulu Plus Sept. 2 announced that subscribers now have the option to stream content commercial-free for $11.99 a month — 50% above the current $7.99 monthly rate.

Tech Companies Form Alliance for New Streaming Video Format

Netflix and Amazon may be changing how people consume video entertainment. Now the companies have formed an alliance of tech firms seeking to create a new open-source video streaming format. Called “Alliance for Open Media,” founding members Amazon, Cisco, Google, Intel Corp., Microsoft, Mozilla and Netflix say they are focused on developing next-generation media formats, codecs and technologies in the public (and their own) interests.
