VSDA Show: <I>Boat Trip</I> Tops Artisan Slate

A Boat Trip, some babes, Latin-style dirty dancing and a ballerina Barbie will highlight Artisan Home Entertainment's fourth quarter 2003 and full-year 2004 slate, executives announced at the supplier's traditional preshow party.

Boat Trip leads Vivica A. Fox and Horatio Sanz showed up to promote the title's Sept. 30 release at the supplier's July 27 event at Baby's night club in the Hard Rock Hotel. Artisan executives and stars introduced DVD extras, including unrated menus with Playboy Playmates sunbathing and providing some racy banter.

“I wrote that segment,” quipped Sanz, who introduced supporting actor Eddie Driscoll and joked he'll get a chance to shine in the DVD deleted scenes as “90 percent” of his performance was cut from the film.

“We're going to have a very aggressive television ad campaign very similar to what we did with Van Wilder,” said Jeff Fink, Artisan president of sales and marketing.

Van Wilder has sold 2 million DVDs and the number continues to grow, Fink said. “Rental revenue on that was very strong,” he said. “We're looking for the same sort of performance [on Boat Trip].”

Artisan also previewed theatrical releases House of the Dead (September theatrical release), based on the Sega video game; Dummy (third quarter theatrical, video 2004), starring Adrien Brody (Oscar winner for The Pianist); the surfing documentary Step Into Liquid (September theatrical, late-third-quarter video), by the son of the director of the Endless Summer movies; the IMAX film All Access (now in theaters, first-quarter 2004 video), with concert performances and backstage footage from such performers as Sting, Dave Matthews, Santana, Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock; and the Marvel comic-based The Punisher (summer 2004 theatrical), starring Thomas Jane, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and John Travolta.

The studio also previewed Havana Nights, the theatrical sequel to Dirty Dancing, which will follow the Nov. 4 release of the Ultimate Dirty Dancing DVD two-disc set. The DVD will be promoted in conjunction with BMG's Ultimate Dirty Dancing soundtrack. There will be a promotional $5 mail-in rebate with the purchase of both. The DVD will also include exclusive footage of Havana Nights.

The T2: Extreme DVD will be repromoted in the fourth quarter, tied to the anticipated release of the third Terminator film on video, Fink said.

Glenn Ross, Artisan EVP and president of its Family Home Entertainment division, introduced the family lineup, including videos based on “Rescue Heroes” and “Care Bears”; an infant development series under the Fisher-Price brand; and the newest Barbie video, Barbie of Swan Lake.

The first two Barbie videos have sold 8 million units to date, Ross said, adding there was “no dropoff in sales between the two titles.”

“It must be saying that we are doing something right,” he said. “We exceeded what most people in the industry told [Mattel] to expect with Barbie.”
