Vivendi Universal Bows Mobile Games Unit7 Mar, 2006 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Vivendi Universal Games, the video game publishing unit of Paris-based Vivendi Universal — owner of Universal Music Group, among other properties — March 7 announced the formation of a mobile games division.
Vivendi Universal Games Mobile (VUG Mobile) will be based in Paris with North American headquarters in Los Angeles and Asia-Pacific in Singapore. Paul Maglione, former SVP of publishing and marketing for London-based mobile game developer I-Play, has been named president of the division.
With the growth of cellular networks, consumer awareness and graphically compatible handsets, mobile gaming — much like music and video — has become the next frontier for content providers.
"Our plan is to leverage our relationships within the Vivendi Universal family and harness our original IP catalog as well as seek fresh concepts from the wider development community to create the most entertaining games for mobile gamers worldwide,” said Maglione.
In addition to three “Crash Bandicoot” titles, other top-selling VUG Mobile franchises include two “Spyro the Dragon” titles, and two titles in the iconic “Leisure Suit Larry” series. Recent new additions are SWAT Force, based on the best-selling VUG PC franchise; and strategy title Empire Earth Mobile.
