Viacom and MTV debut Mobile 'Barrio 19'

Monday, April 24, Viacom's MTV Networks International division premiered its new show “Barrio 19” as an exclusive to mobile TV channels in Europe prior to the show's airing on the cable channel.

“Barrio 19,” a six-episode, half-hour series filmed in Brazil, France, Germany, Japan Mexico and the United Kingdom that showcases up-and-coming urban talent, will air on all MTV channels worldwide starting May 7.

The show is a production from MTVNI's programming development arm, The Greenhouse, which formed last year.

“As our first-ever premiere of a new series on mobile, ‘Barrio 19's sketch-based format is uniquely suited for the range of media platforms young people use today,” said Richard Godfrey, SVP and commissioning editor of production, operations and development for MTVNI. “The Greenhouse will continue to develop breakthrough formats and deliver them to our audience across TV, PC and mobile screens.”

In other multimedia developments for the company, Viacom also announced this week it has reached a $102 million cash agreement to acquire online gaming and community platform Xfire, Inc.

The game and social networking service will be folded into MTV Networks and will get integrated marketing with the cable network, according to the company.

Xfire launched in 2004 and has 4 million members.
