USA Sets Record With Super Bowl Video

USA Home Entertainment was "closing in on" 400,000 total units shipped middle of last week for its New England Patriots Super Bowl XXXVI Champions debuting March 5 (VHS, $14.95, DVD, $19.95).

"This would make it the biggest shipment, out of the box, for a sports video since ... Adam and Eve," said an enthusiastic Joe Amodei, president of USA Home Entertainment, who added that the 1998 Super Bowl video reached about 300,000 units shipped at launch.

"The excitement about this game and the halftime show just hasn't let up," said Amodei.

The fact that shipments of VHS and DVD have been close to 50-50 through last week came as a surprise, he said, as he was anticipating 60 percent VHS and figured that the U2 halftime concert included on the DVD may have attracted a younger demographic. The bulk of the orders have been from the New England area, Amodei said (typical with championship game videos in all sports, the video sells predominantly in the winning team's region), but the video has met with success outside of that region, again he surmised, because of the U2 concert.

USA will have a premiere party celebrating the video's release the same night at the Loew's Cineplex in Boston, where a number of players and coaches from the team (including MVP quarterback Tom Brady) will be making an appearance.
