Universal to Turn Clive Barker's 'Tortured Souls' Action-Figure Pitch Into Horror Franchise12 Nov, 2001 By: Staff Reporter
Universal Pictures has paid low-six figures against $2 million for rights to a potential horror film franchise based on Clive Barker and Todd McFarlane's sadomasochistic 'Tortured Souls' action figures.
In an effort to spark interest in the project, Barker sent out the action figures -- issued this year by McFarlane Toys and bearing such names as Venal Anatomica and Mongroid -- to studio executives on Halloween. Each of the six figurines comes with a corresponding novella.
Universal president of production Mary Parent and v.p. production Tim O'Hair were instrumental in securing the project for the studio.
Barker is writing a treatment for the first film and will produce with McFarlane. Joe Daley at Barker's Seraphim Films and Terry Fitzgerald at McFarlane's company will co-produce.
Universal would retain merchandising rights to the project, except those for the actual toys.
