Two Titles Battle for Top Spot3 Aug, 2006 By: Thomas K. Arnold
Two titles with similar box office earnings slugged it out for the top spot on the DVD charts, and in the end it was a draw.
New Line Home Entertainment's creepy Final Destination 3 thriller, which earned $54.1 million in theaters, topped the VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week ended July 20, while Sony Pictures' baseball comedy The Benchwarmers, with $57.7 million, took the top slot on Home Media Retailing's video rental chart.
Final Destination 3 was No. 2 on the rental chart, while The Benchwarmers was No. 2 in DVD sales for the week.
The Benchwarmers earned an estimated $11.8 million in rental revenue, or more than 20% of its box office take, while the third “Final Destination” movie — and highest-grossing of the three in the series — took in $9.2 million, or 17% of its theatrical gross.
More than a year after his show went on the air, Dave Chappelle is still immensely popular with DVD buyers. Paramount Home Entertainment's Chappelle's Show: The Lost Episodes — Uncensored debuted at No. 3 on the First Alert sales chart, pushing last week's top DVD seller, the theatrical feature She's the Man, also from Paramount, to No. 4.
The Sony Pictures TV DVD release The Boondocks: The Complete First Season, which the studio heavily promoted at this year's San Diego Comic-Con International, made a strong debut on the sales chart, snagging the No. 7 spot its first week in stores.
