Two Disney Films on iTunes Same Day as DVD6 Nov, 2006 By: Thomas K. Arnold
Two of the year's biggest theatrical releases, both from the Walt Disney Co., will be available for download from the Apple iTunes store the same day they arrive on DVD.
Cars will be available Nov. 7 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest will be out Dec. 5.
Both titles are priced at $12.99, the standard price for new releases during their first week of availability. The downloaded versions contain none of the extras found on the DVD. A week after the titles become available, the price goes up to $14.99. Older films, including the first “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, are $9.99.
The Cars DVD lists for $29.99, but is widely available at mass merchants this week for less than $15. Amazon has it on sale for $14.99.
The two-disc special edition DVD of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest lists for $34.99 and is available for pre-order on Amazon for $19.99.
Of the major studios, only Disney is supporting iTunes with movies. Apple chief executive Steve Jobs is a Disney board member. Apple unveiled its new movie download service in September, with an initial slate of more than 75 films, all from Disney labels.
