TV Epic 'Roots' Returns on 25th Anniversary Edition DVD Jan 15

"Roots" -- the 1977 landmark TV mini-series based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book byAlex Haley -- makes its DVD debut Jan. 15, 2002 with Roots 25th Anniversary Edition, a three-disc DVD set on Warner Home Video.

Winner of many prestigous awards, the WHV release has been digitally remastered for optimal video and audio presentation from the original elements.

The Roots 25th Anniversary Edition DVD will sell for $59.98 SRP.

Special features of the Roots 25th Anniversary Edition three-disc DVD include:

-- Newly recorded extensive commentaries with, among others, David Wolper, Ed Asner, LeVar Burton, Leslie Uggams, Jon Amos, GeorgStanford Brown and other key members of the cast and creative team;

-- Video coverage of the recording sessions that allows viewers to watch the commentary with the option to jump from the movie to video highlights of the sessions when prompted on screen;

-- "Remembering Roots," a look back by the commentaryparticipants on how their lives have been affected by "Roots," with additional footage shot at the commentary sessions;

-- A "Roots" Family Tree that includes chronology with bios and facts;

-- Languages: English and Spanish; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; and

-- DVD-ROM features such as an interactive "Roots" family tree and Website links.

Providing promotional support for the DVD, a 25th anniversary retrospective TV special, "Roots - Celebrating 25 Years," will be broadcast Jan. 18 on NBC coinciding with the debut of the DVD. This commemorative program will include interviews and reflections on the "Roots" experience with cast members and a diverse mix of TVviewers whose lives were touched by the original miniseries.

Produced by David L. Wolper and Stan Margulies and originally broadcast inJanuary 1977, "Roots: The Miniseries" was the highest-rated TV event of its day, seen by 130-million viewers (85% of all TV homes) during its initial U.S. telecasts. It is still the third highest-rated broadcast in TV history.

Roots features a galaxy of star power, including award-winning performances by Louis Gossett, Jr., Edward Asner, Ben Vereen and Leslie Uggams. Also starring are LeVar Burton, Maya Angelou, Lorne Greene, George Hamilton and Cicely Tyson. Georg Stanford Brown, Burl Ives, Ian McShane, Richard Roundtreeand O.J. Simpson are also featured.
