Toshiba Officially Delays HD DVD Player Launch

28 Sep, 2005 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Toshiba Corp. announced today it would delay the launch of its HD DVD player until February or March next year.

Toshiba, which is a primary backer of next-generation DVD format HD DVD, and Sony Corp., principal supporter of rival format Blu-ray, have been engaged in a long-running public relations battle over alleged superiorities, capabilities and market launches of the respective formats.

Toshiba spokesman Mark Knox, an adviser to the company's HD DVD promotion division, earlier this month confirmed the company would begin rolling out HD DVD players in Japan in the fourth quarter and expected to have software support from Japanese packaged media suppliers, including a significant selection of anime titles.
