Toshiba CEO: 'Not Given Up' on Unified Format27 Jun, 2006 By: Erik Gruenwedel
The president and CEO of Toshiba Corp., principal backer of next-generation optical-disc format HD DVD, Tuesday said he would like to see a unified format despite the fact rivals Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Samsung Electronics last week rolled out seven Blu-ray Disc movies and a player, respectively.
Toshiba bowed HD DVD players in the United States in April to coincide with about 20 subsequent HD DVD movies from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
“We have not given up on a unified format. We would like to seek ways for unifying the standards if opportunities arise,” president Atsutoshi Nishida told an annual shareholders' meeting, according to a Reuters report.
