Top Emmy Winners on DVD

A big win at the Emmy Awards could translate to big sales, with several of the winners available on DVD.

ABC's “Lost” was the big winner for Outstanding Drama Series. The show was nominated for 12 Emmys and took home six, earning honors for its music, visual effects and direction. Lost: The Complete First Season came out Sept. 6 from Buena Vista Home Entertainment.

CBS's “Everybody Loves Raymond” celebrated its final season with its second win for Outstanding Comedy Series. The show received 13 nominations and won three, including for the supporting work of Brad Garrett (his second) and Doris Roberts (her fourth). Warner Home Video has thus far released DVDs of the first four seasons of the series as well as the series finale episode.

Tony Shalhoub won his second consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a comedy for playing the title role in “Monk,” the first three seasons of which are on DVD from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a comedy went to Felicity Huffman of “Desperate Housewives,” one of six awards for the hit ABC show. Desperate Housewives: The Complete First Season hit shelves Sept. 20 from Buena Vista.

Best made-for-TV-movie honors went to Warm Springs, which focused on Franklin D. Roosevelt's early struggles with polio. Jane Alexander took home a supporting actress award for her work in the film, which won five statuettes. The movie is on DVD from HBO.

Geoffrey Rush won the top award for lead actor in a made-for-TV-movie for his turn in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers. The HBO biopic won a total of nine Emmys. S. Epatha Merkerson's lead performance in Lackawanna Blues and Paul Newman's supporting work in Empire Falls also where honored in the movie/miniseries category. All three films are on DVD from Warner.

“South Park” picked up its first Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program (less than one hour), winning for the ninth-season episode “Best Friends Forever,” which satirized the Terri Schiavo case. Seasons 1-5 of “South Park” are currently available on DVD, with South Park: The Complete Sixth Season streeting Oct. 11 from Paramount.

Star Wars: Clone Wars — Volume 2 was named the top animated program of more than one hour. The Volume 2 DVD will hit shelves Dec. 6 from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

“The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” won awards for writing and Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series. A special Indecision 2004 DVD set featuring highlights from the show is available from Paramount.

“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” was named Outstanding Reality Program just as Buena Vista is preparing the Nov. 22 release of a DVD highlighting the show's first season.

The seventh season of “The Amazing Race,” which won Outstanding Reality Competition Program, crosses the finish line Dec. 20 on DVD from Paramount.
