TiVo Sues EchoStar for Alleged Patent Infringement7 Jan, 2004 By: Holly J. Wagner
TiVo Inc. has sued satellite provider EchoStar Communications in a case alleging EchoStar is infringing TiVo's “Time Warp” patent.
Key TiVo inventions protected by the Time Warp patent include a method for recording one program while playing back another, watching a program as it is recording, and a storage format that supports advanced TrickPlay capabilities that give users VCR functionality.
“We've invested in building a comprehensive patent portfolio to protect our intellectual property, and as the DVR category grows, we will be aggressive in protecting those assets," said TiVo CEO Mike Ramsay.
EchoStar competitor DirecTV has placed more TiVo units in homes than any other sales channel, a testament to the popularity of DVRs among satellite consumers.
TiVo filed the relevant patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in July 1998.
