TiVo to Offer Amazon Unbox Video DownloadsERIK GRUENWEDELTiVo and Amazon Feb. 7 announced a deal that would allow select subscribers of the digital video recording pioneer to rent and purchase movies and television content from online retailer's Unbox video download service.
The so-called "Amazon Unbox on TiVo" program is currently testing the program that offers content from CBS Corp., 20th Century Fox Entertainment, Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Warner Bros. Entertainment.
TV episodes would cost $1.99, with movie purchases ranging from $9.99 to $14.99. Movie rentals would begin at $1.99.
The deal represents one of the first efforts to bridge the gap between watching entertainment derived from the Internet on the TV instead of just the PC.
Amazon's Unbox, which launched last September, currently offers video content downloadable for PCs and Windows Media Video-compatible devices.
"Tivo is taking the best way to watch TV and making it the best way to get popular movies and TV shows from major Hollywood studios," said TiVo CEO Tom Rogers.
Alviso, Calif.-based TiVo has about 1.5 million subscribers with broadband-enabled TV set-top boxes.
