ThunderDorm Hits the Road

High-tech hardware makers launched a road trip today with the opening of the second annual ThunderDorm Campus Technology Tour today at the University of Connecticut.

The nationwide tour sponsored by 360 Youth, the media and marketing arm of Alloy, Inc., and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) will run for eight weeks, reaching 23 campuses and totaling 33 days of events. Sponsors of the event include PlayStation 2, Yahoo!, Apple Computer, Inc. and the New York Times Electronic Edition.

The ThunderDorm Campus Technology Tour will focus on demonstrating the latest in consumer technology for the college lifestyle, and will feature on- campus entertainment, sponsored activity tents and interactive product demonstrations. More than 15 sponsors will showcase their products. A number of sponsors will provide electronic prizes to be awarded to students on site, with one lucky student winning the Grand Prize: the Ultimate Dorm Room, a fully furnished room courtesy of IKEA complete with the latest technology and electronics from participating sponsors.

The ThunderDorm experience will consist of:

  • The centerpiece of the tour, ThunderDorm, is a Plexiglas-encased, custom-fabricated trailer housing the Ultimate Dorm Room. The ThunderDorm will showcase the latest high-tech electronics and gadgets featuring products from participating sponsors Altec Lansing Technologies, Apple Computer, Inc., Gemini Industries, Jensen, Kenwood USA, LG Mobile Phones, Palm, SonicBlue, Sprint and Toshiba. Students can enter to win the contents of the Ultimate Dorm Room including an A/V receiver, DVD player, home theater speaker system, MP3 player, headphones, desktop computer, computer speakers, universal remote, personal data assistant (PDA) and cell phone.

  • The Buzz Net Audio Pavilion: BuzzNet's interactive experience will showcase consumer audio equipment featuring the newest products from companies such as Yamaha, Pioneer, e.Digital, Bantam Interactive, SSI America and Digital Innovations. The Pavilion will also house a Gaming area by Play Station2 and Altec Lansing Technologies and the Surround Sound Annex showcasing products from Aperion Audio, Denon Electronics and Toshiba.

  • Presenting Sponsors Tents: Product demonstrations, premium distribution and more will feature:

    – PlayStation 2: Featuring eight gaming kiosks where students can play the latest games using the Network Adaptor for PlayStation 2 and battle against other online gamers nationwide.

    – A "Spring Break Lounge" will promote Panama City Beach as the ultimate Spring Break destination for 2003.

  • The CEA Wireless Pavilion will feature six kiosks with various wireless platforms allowing communication between the kiosks and other outside areas. Wireless products from Sprint, Palm, Plantronics and Jabra will be featured.

  • Registration/DJ Tent where students can register for a chance to win the products featured inside the Ultimate Dorm Room. DJ's will spin as well as emcee contests and promotional giveaways. Custom-made ThunderDorm premiums will also be distributed. Sponsors including Jensen, the New York Times Electronic Edition, Altec Lansing Technologies, LG Mobile Phones, SonicBlue, TiVo, and Yahoo! will showcase and demo their latest products.
