Tech Companies Offer Alternative to Induce Act27 Aug, 2004 By: Erik Gruenwedel
A group of telecommunications companies has submitted alternative language to proposed legislation aimed at curbing copyright infringement and piracy.
The bipartisan bill, Inducing Infringement of Copyrights Act, would, among other things, create civil liability for “whoever intentionally induces any violation” of copyrights.
Critics have argued that vagueness of the act could subject unlimited liability to many in the entertainment food chain, including manufacturers, distributors and the trade press.
Internet service providers Verizon, MCI and SBC reportedly submitted an alternative with language tailored to curbing direct copyright infringement.
