Taken 3 'Taken 3' Takes Over Top Spot on Disc Sales Charts

After weeks without a major new release driving home video sales, Fox's 'Taken 3' came to the rescue the week ended April 26. The action sequel debuted at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, as well as the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

Sony Pictures Ups Q4 Operating Profit

Sony Pictures appears to be recovering from its well-publicized cyber attack this past November, reporting fourth-quarter (ended March 31) operating income of $379 million, up 10% from income of $344.5 million during the previous-year period. Studio revenue was flat (down 1.5%) to $1.09 billion.

Beset with a $31.9 million pre-tax charge associated with previously-announced restructuring, DreamWorks Animation April 30 reported a first-quarter (ended March 31) net loss of $54.8 million — up 27.5% from a net loss of $42.9 million during the prior-year period.

Starz Distribution Ups Q1 Profit

Starz Distribution April 30 reported first-quarter (ended March 31) pre-tax operating income of $26.4 million, up $13.7 million (108%) from pre-tax operating income of $12.7 million during the previous-year period. Revenue increased 25% ($22.4 million) to $109.7 million, due largely to licensing certain Starz Original titles to Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video.

Time Warner Cable Q1 Video Subs Down 344,000

Time Warner Cable April 30 made news when it reported its first quarterly net gain of video subscribers since 2009. Yet, when comparing the quarter with the previous-year period, TWC actually had 344,000 fewer video subs.
