Survey Shows VOD Takes Away From Rentals

12 Dec, 2005 By: Holly J. Wagner

Starz Entertainment Group — which offers 750 movies a month on demand via cable networks — claims 70 percent of its video-on-demand viewers no longer rent or buy DVDs from stores.

Other findings in the survey were that 72 percent of users rent fewer DVDs and 60 percent of users buy fewer DVDs.

Starz provides a separate satellite signal to cable companies that offer VOD with messages reminding viewers that Starz On Demand comes at no additional charge and is easy to use. The company premieres all its major theatrical movies on demand an average of 15 days before they appear on the linear services, and also includes bonus features on demand that are not available on the linear channels.

The "Starz On Demand Satisfaction Tracker" polled 488 Starz subscribers ages 18 to 64 between Sept. 26, to Oct. 5. OTX Research fielded the study and processed the data.
