Sundance Dances Online

16 Jan, 2002 By: Hive News

Folks who can't make it to the Sundance Film Festival need not miss out on all the fun. Instead they can visit the 2002 Sundance Online Film Festival (sundanceonlinefilmfestival.com), part of the Sundance Digital Initiative.

"The entire film industry is undergoing a digital transformation that will forever affect the way films are created, distributed and experienced," reads an online explanation of the site. "This second edition of the Sundance Online Film Festival represents some of the most exciting work being made for the Web today."

This year, the Short Film Showcase features five entries from the Sundance Film Festival as part of the online lineup.

The online festival consists of three other sections. The top film in the Animation and Live Action sections will earn the Audience Award based on responses from online viewers. The New Forms section points to the inspiring future possibilities of Web entertainment.

Viewers can learn about the films and filmmakers by visiting the Sundance Online Resource Center, where they can also and watch and rate films and animations.

The Media Services division of rich media systems provider Sonic Foundry encoded high quality streaming media versions of the films being showcased.

Sonic Foundry used its proprietary PureStream technology, a capture and preprocessing system designed for film-originated content to dramatically reduce judder, interpolation and macroblocking typically associated with encoding of 24 fps film content for the Internet.
