Sales of packaged media may be soft, but not in adult entertainment, according to estimated 2005 data released by Adult Video News. The multiple-source study found that overall sales of adult entertainment generated $12.6 billion, including nearly $4.3 billion in video sales and rentals. Adult video sales and rentals generated $4.21 billion in 2004.
The study reported that 13,588 hardcore titles (features, new releases and compilations) were released in 2005. DVD and VHS rentals topped 957 million units and sales surpassed 1 billion units.
Online adult entertainment accounted for 20 percent ($2.5 billion) of revenues followed by exotic dance clubs at 16 percent ($2 billion).
Separately, the 2006 AVN Adult Entertainment Expo takes place Jan. 5-8 at the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas.
"The sources of revenue [in the study] will all be participating at the 2006 AVN Adult Entertainment Expo," said group show director Liz Crawford. "With more than 350 exhibiting companies, the Expo will be a showcase of the very best movies and videos, adult cabarets, novelty manufacturers, publications, and other producers of exciting adult products and services."
