Studios to Put Anti-Piracy Inserts in Disc Packaging

LAS VEGAS — Studios will begin putting an anti-piracy insert in disc packaging of DVDs released in the first and second quarters of this year.

The insert is produced by DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group, a Los Angeles-based, industry-funded nonprofit corporation that advocates and promotes DVD. The pamphlet urges consumers to buy authentic discs rather than pirated copies and will appear in titles from DEG studio members Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Lionsgate, New Line Home Entertainment, Paramount Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video.

“The DEG is pleased to lead this first step of unified industry support against theft of creative content,” said Bob Chapek, president, DEG, and president, Buena Vista Worldwide Home Entertainment. “The anti-piracy insert reminds consumers about respecting copyrights. We hope to encourage consumers to show their enthusiasm for filmed entertainment by using approved channels to buy content.”

The group also plans to secure participation from hardware companies.

The insert is part of a larger DEG initiative to combat piracy in the home entertainment industry. The DEG also is developing a Web site that will educate consumers on anti-piracy.
