The first movie-game hybrid for Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) will be released Nov. 15 by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
The action film Stealth, which grossed $31.6 million in theaters, will share its Universal Media Disc (UMD) with an exclusive PSP game, Wipeout Pure: Stealth Edition, a three-level variant of the best-selling Wipeout Pure video game.
Benjamin Feingold, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, said his goal is to bridge the gap between the gaming and movie-watching communities.
“We're trying to enhance the attractiveness of movies to the gamer and the attractiveness of game play to the movie buffs,” he said.
Feingold said he also hopes to add incremental revenue to studio coffers from UMD software sales — which he sees as critical at a time when the DVD business appears to be softening. Ultimately, he said, he'd like to see more dedicated video game stores and chains carry DVD — and escalating demand for movies on UMD might just do the trick.
The Stealth UMD, which comes out the same day as the DVD, includes three tracks, three space crafts and three player modes. One of the tracks is not found on the original Wipeout Pure game, the No. 2 game on the PSP sales charts.
