Seeking to expand upon its successful “Song of the Day” promotion, Starbucks Coffee Co. and Apple's iTunes Music Store have partnered to offer customers a free “Pick of the Week” music download.
Each Tuesday, Starbuck's 7,000-plus locations will stock download cards redeemable for a specific artist, song and music video selected by Starbucks and available at iTunes.com.
The promotional cards, which began this week with Counting Crows' new track “Washington Square,” are good for 60 days.
Upcoming artists include Carly Simon, Duffy, Adele, Sia and Hilary McRae.
Starbucks and iTunes bowed the Song of the Day promotion last year for the launch of the Starbucks-branded iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store accessed at select locations in New York, Seattle and San Francisco. The promotion generated more than 6 million song downloads.
Both companies say the program will help drive awareness of new artists and music, but actual product sales associated with the Wi-Fi Music Store were not disclosed.
Ken Lombard, president of Starbucks Entertainment, said the deal with iTunes provides Starbucks' customers with “a world-class digital discovery experience.”
The two companies began a business relationship in 2006 with the launch of the Starbucks Entertainment Area on iTunes.
