'Star Wars' Awakens Disney's Bottom Line

Despite being released just 15 days before the end of the fiscal quarter, 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' helped Walt Disney Studios post a record $1 billion in first-quarter (ended Jan. 2) operating income, up 86% from operating income of $537.6 million during the previous-year period. Revenue increased 46% to $2.7 billion from $1.8 billion. It was the studio’s most-profitable quarter ever.

Viacom chairman/CEO Philippe Dauman Viacom CEO: Paramount in 'Brief Income Slump'

Paramount Pictures Feb. 9 reported a first-quarter (ended Dec. 31, 2015) operating loss of $146 million, which was up 143% from a previous-year loss of $60 million. Revenue dropped 15% to $612 million as a result of underperforming theatrical and home entertainment units.

Dove Channel Touts 22,000 Subscribers

Cinedigm Corp. Feb. 9 said it estimates the upstart Dove Channel subscription streaming service has 22,000 paying subs since its launch in September. The channel, along with CONtv and Docurama, represents the home entertainment distributor’s foray into the over-the-top video space.
