Sprint Nextel to Carry Disney/ABC VOD

16 May, 2007 By: Erik Gruenwedel

The Walt Disney Co. and ABC Television Group May 15 announced that Sprint Nextel would become the first telecommunications provider to offer video-on-demand of a major network's prime time TV shows.

Beginning this week and through the season finales of ABC's Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Lost and Ugly Betty, Sprint subscribers (for an additional $20 per month) can access on-demand episodes the day after their TV airing or on three linear mobile channels that continuously stream the most recent episodes.

Other programming, which includes ABC News broadcasts World News with Charles Gibson, Nightline and This Week with George Stephanopoulos, in addition to Disney Channel programming, including Hannah Montana, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, Cory in the House and Kim Possible, is available for an additional $15 monthly charge.

The mobile channels will include select advertising as well.

Last year, ABC began repurposing select ad-supported TV episodes via a media player on its Web site with little impact on its television ratings.

“We continue to be focused on finding new ways to connect viewers to the content they want and brands they love on the platforms they choose,” said Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney-ABC Television Group. “This deal not only provides new viewing opportunities for consumers, but also gives advertisers another platform to reach viewers and associate with our powerful network brands.”
