South Beach Diet Works Out on DVD

The cardiologist behind the best-selling “South Beach Diet” books is coming out with his first companion workout DVD.

Koch Vision May 13 will release The South Beach Diet Supercharged Workout ($14.98). The DVD is being released to coincide with Dr. Arthur Agatston's upcoming book, The South Beach Diet Supercharged, which arrives April 28.

“What we're trying to do is create something the average person can get into,” Agatston said.

The doctor has several exercise books and a cookbook. This is the first DVD for the brand. The 65-minute routine combines core-strengthening exercises and cardio intervals inspired by Pilates.

“When we first wrote The South Beach Diet, I always thought exercise was important, but I didn't have any new information about workouts,” Agatston said.

Since publishing the earlier “South Beach Diet” books, which first came out five years ago, the doctor has learned the importance of strengthening the core muscles and the impact of interval training, where the workout switches back and forth between high-intensity periods and recovery periods.

“You burn more calories in less time, and you get more of an afterburn,” Agatston said.The doctor compared interval training to accelerating and braking on a car, which uses more gas.

Trainers Kris Belding and Joe Signorile designed the workout, which is for both beginners and advanced exercisers. The routines aim to improve metabolic levels through a more efficient workout.

“We thought it was very important, in particular for women who don't have a lot of time for exercise,” Agatston said.
