Sony Sells Chip to Toshiba

18 Oct, 2007 By: Chris Tribbey

A long rumored deal that has Sony Corp. selling its Cell microprocessor chip production lines to Toshiba Corp. became a reality Oct. 18.

Both companies acknowledged they had reached an agreement, but were working price details, and had pegged early 2008 as a target for getting the deal done. Previous reports put the price of the sale at roughly $870 million.

The Cell microprocessor was co-developed by IBM Corp., Toshiba and Sony, and is used in the PlayStation 3 and camcorders.

Sony also announced it had reached an agreement with the other two companies to create a more advanced version of the product.
