30 Jun, 2008 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Sony Computer Entertainment America June 30 disclosed details of its free 2.40 firmware upgrade — available July 2 — for the PlayStation 3 video game console that allow users easier interaction with each other, among other features.

The firmware showcases the so-called XMB access in-game feature that allows gamers to communicate with their online friends via messaging, view profiles, access the PlayStation network and manage store downloads, including music for personalized background tunes while playing.

Users can earn virtual (gold, silver and bronze) Trophies and showcase them on their profiles.

Game titles that offer Trophy support include Buzz! Quiz TV; Little Big Planet; MotorStorm; NBA 2009; Pain; PixelJunk; Resistance; SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation; and Warhawk.
