Sony to Promote PS3's Blu-ray Playback24 Sep, 2007 By: Chris Tribbey
Many owners of the PS3 aren't taking advantage of its Blu-ray capabilities, and Sony will be heavily marketing the game system as a high-def player this holiday season, Kaz Hirai, president of Sony's game unit, told the Financial Times of London Sept. 20.
“The PS3 is first and foremost a video games machine but we want to say ‘by the way, it's a great Blu-ray player as well,’ he told the publication during the Tokyo Games Show.
The game console will be marketed heavily as a Blu-ray player in the United States, Europe and Japan, and Hirai also did not dismiss the possibility of another price cut for the system, if software availability was at a level “to back it up,” he told FT.
The PS3 has played second fiddle in terms of units sold to both the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the Wii from Nintendo.
