Sony Pictures Classics has won the North American Rights to Argentina's highest-grossing film of all time, Son of the Bride from Patagonik Film Group.
Directed by Juan Jose Campanella, Son of the Bride is a comedy about a middle-aged Buenos Aires man consumed with his responsibilities running the family restaurant. When he begins to feel at his lowest and most alone, unexpected events force him to reevaluate his life and the love he never recognized surrounding him.
The film stars Ricardo Darin, (who also stars in Patagonik's Nine Queens) and Norma Aleandro (The Official Story).
Son of the Bride won the Best Latin American feature at the Montreal Film Festival as well as receiving a Special Grand Jury prize. The film most recently screened at the Palm Springs Film Festival.
"Some of the most exciting filmmaking in the world today is happening in Argentina," noted Michael Barker and Tom Bernard, copresidents of Sony Pictures Classics. "Son of the Bride is the perfect followup to Nine Queens, which we bought last year and are about to open in the United States. It is the most emotionally satisfying film we have seen in a long time." Nine Queens opens April 12.
Patagonik Film Group, Pol-ka Producciones, Jempsa and Tornasol Films produced the Son of the Bride, which is Argentina's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award.
Sony Pictures Classics and Neil Friedman of Menemsha Productions negotiated the deal. Menemsha Productions worked previously with Sony Pictures Classics on the highest grossing Iranian film in the United States, Color of Paradise, and last year's Academy Award nominee from the Czech Republic, "Divided We Fall.
