Sony Computer Entertainment, maker of the PlayStation 2 game console, has purchased a 19% stake in Tokyo-based gamemaker Square Co. for about $124 million, according to an Associated Press report from Tokyo on Tuesday.
Sony said that investing in Square will allow both companies to work together to develop online games, according to the AP report.
Square Co. makes the Final Fantasy series, which has sold 35 million copies worldwide and was recently turned into a movie that fell far short of revenue goals at U.S. box office. The company is said to have invested $116 million in the movie.
