Sony Brings Forth Slender OLED Hi-def TV12 Apr, 2007 By: Jessica Wolf
The OLED will only be shipped in Japan thus far.
Sony Electronics will be the first major manufacturer to ship the newest level of high-definition screen technology — the OLED (organic light emitting diode).
According to InformationWeek, the electronics giant confirmed last week that it will begin shipping an 11-inch TV with OLED display in Japan only.
OLED displays are more cost effective to mass produce than LCD or Plasma displays, and are “thin, lightweight displays that are bright and easy to read, that consume less power, that are flexible and, when turned off, even transparent,” according to the Universal Display Corporation, developer of the technology.
Sony competitors Panasonic and Toshiba have yet to announce firm plans to ship TVs with OLED displays.
