Sonicblue Device Will Prevent Copying

11 Feb, 2002 By: Hive News

Copyright protection company Macrovision Corp. and Sonicblue have renewed a deal to incorporate Macrovision's video copy protection technology into Sonicblue's ReplayTV digital video recorders (DVRs).

The new DVRs will incorporate a detection circuit capable of determining whether a copyright owner has encoded an incoming analog video program with Macrovision's copy protection process. The Macrovision copy protection process helps prevent the recording of permanent copies onto a VCR and will prevent users from sharing a Macrovision-encoded program with other consumers via the Internet.

A feature in Sonicblue's Replay 4000 series brought down the ire of movie studios because it lets users send programs to up to 15 Web-connected friends.
