Sonic Solutions, one of the companies that makes DVD and CD creation and copying software, has bought InterActual Technologies, the company whose technology is behind Internet-connected bonus materials on a number of discs, for $8.8 million.
The company's DVD player software for PCs is included on a number of discs, including New Line Home Entertainment's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Buena Vista's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Warner Home Video's The Matrix Reloaded and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Universal's Seabiscuit, and Columbia TriStar's Spider-Man.
In the deal, Sonic gets InterActual's Web-enabling technologies, including its portfolio of 17 patents and patent applications, the InterActual Player, and all engineering and service operations. Sonic intends to offer its professional customers an enhanced DVD product line and expand its technology licensing portfolio.
