Sonic, Macrovision to License Download DVD Software

13 Oct, 2006 By: Erik Gruenwedel

DVD copying-product manufacturer Sonic Solutions and encryption-software manufacturer Macrovision Corp. have announced a joint licensing agreement for technology that would allow traditional and online retailers to sell on-demand copy-protected DVD downloads.

The technology is aimed at studios and content holders who have been hesitant — due to costs associated with implementing anti-piracy measures on limited production runs — to release less mainstream product for download onto DVD.

“Today, DVDs remain the easiest way for consumers to watch movies at home and on the road, but most DVD stores have a limited inventory, which results in lost sales opportunities,” said Rob Enderle, principal analyst for the Enderle Group. “What Sonic and Macrovision have done is make it possible to move nearly unlimited and secure DVD libraries incredibly close to potential buyers, opening up new profit opportunities for studios and retail partners that simply were not possible before.”

Sonic in July licensed its burn-to-DVD software to online movie download service Movielink.
